I met Millie while waiting for a friend to finish
up with her jazz piano lesson. One of several
four-legged family members in the piano
teacher's musical household, she had the
most beautiful yellow-green eyes.
Millie generously allowed me to share one end
of the couch with her, semi-ignoring me from
the opposite side. At first, no amount of
conversation could entice her to come closer.
However, when I reached for the knitting I'd
brought along to pass the time, she was
immediately intrigued.
Slowly she inched her way across the couch.
When I placed the ball of yarn next to me, Millie
offered to keep a paw on top so it wouldn't roll
away. After about 10 minutes, she decided
she'd rather curl up in my lap, so the knitting
was put aside. With a background of jazz
piano playing softly nearby, we both closed
our eyes – two old friends, relaxing in
comfortable silence.
