April 29, 2012: From our backyard, you can
see a gently sloping ridge, and the tip of what
is currently known as Courthouse Rock
(next to Bell Rock).
After we'd moved here, we found an old
postcard referring to this red rock butte as
Cathedral Rock, rather than Courthouse.
According to local history, back in the '70s,
maps of the area were updated. A Forest
Service cartographer accidentally switched
around the names of these two major rock
formations and maps were printed before
anyone noticed the error.
Old-timers still refer to it as Cathedral or
Church Rock. It makes a lot of sense, as the
overall shape is very 'cathedral-like'; so, we
like to call it by that name as well.
Today, my eye was drawn to the banner of
blue line sky, sandwiched between two
elongated cloud formations that highlighted
the tip of one of our favorite rock formations.
